Create your own adventure

So Battlechicken recently posted about a project that Newbie Blogger is running where you try to create your own boss. I decided to make a “Create Your Own Adventure” series out of it, take it a few steps further. I’m going to be doing a series of reveals over the next month about a 5-man dungeon I created.

First I didn’t want it to be a level 85 or 90 dungeon cause those are done to hell and back again. I wanted to make it a lower level dungeon, probably in the 50′s or 60′s since we haven’t had a new one of those in a very long time. Right here goes, back story and the first boss.

Kick down the door this is MY town

Imagine a peaceful town, you could call it Tarren Mill if you wanted. After Southshore fell and went all oozie the Dark Illusionist Victor Telfield a forsaken that fell out of faith with Sylvanis after the fall of the Lich King. He’s spent the last couple of years hiding from the heroes of Azeroth and building up his power base. Now with all the heroes out wondering the planes of the Pandaria, he took the opportunity to grab up Tarren Mill and transform it into his playground. The first of what he hopes to be many. Now it is up to the new generation of heroes to bring him to justice.

The battlefield

Walking into Tarren Mill instance will have you appear on the crossroads right before Tarren Mill, once you step toward the road it warps your mind from the first second you’re there.

All that you see isn’t true, and most of what you don’t see is out there to kill you.

The Mill has changed from a quaint village to a long sprawling road that is lined with the houses of the damned. Most of the villagers are either turned into mindless ghouls or are bring held in pins to be turned later.

The dungeon is broken up into 5 parts, the Illusionist only grants you the ability to see one section at a time. You have to kill the watcher of the land and loot his soul to make it to the next. The Victor Telfield has taken a sample of blood from each the, Sherriff, Town Mayor, Doctor, and Carpenter. He has turned them into abominations each has developed some new and interesting abilities.

Watcher Calvin Stamford the Carpenter and his love Lorna Stamford

You are presented with a forest of thick trees, you can just see a house through the branches. You can hear a rumbling come from the forest and yellow eyes peering at you.

Worgs: When you step into the forest you will get battered by waves of Worgs that wont stop until you enter into the Carpenters House. The longer you stay out in the woods the more damage the worgs will do to you. Heavy AoE would be useful here.

Calvin Stamford the Carpenter:

He makes you see such wonderful things, such beautiful wonderful things. I can see my love Lorna now, she sings to me. All he asks in return is that I do his bidding for him. My darling Lorna I will do anything for you.

Phase 1:

  • Saw Blade: Calvin summons giant circular saws from the walls and floor that if not avoided will do 50% of your health to you over 5 seconds.
  • Calvin’s Melee: Calvin does a basic melee attack for the first 1/3 of the encounter. Once you reduce his health by 35%, you are taken to the ghost plane to battle his wife.

Phase 2:

You leave my darling ALONE, now you’ll face the wrath of a scorned woman.

  • Ghost Realm: The saws disappear and you get a debuff that does damage to you for the entire time that you are there.
  • Lorna: She does a basic ranged attack. She does a party wide fear every 15 seconds. Once you reduce her health by 35% you’ll be brought back to the mortal realm.

Phase 3:

You fiends, now I will gladly deliver your souls to the Master.

  • Sins of the Woodsman: Calvin summons treants to aid him in the final battle. The reduce healing and damage done by 40%. They can not be killed or controlled in any way.
  • Calvin’s Melee: He continues to do his basic melee attack until he is dead.

Give me the fat LOOTS

That’s it for the first boss, after he’s dead you’d loot the Spirit of Calvin and Lorna. I wanted there to be enough mechanics so that it allowed “lowbies” to learn raid awareness from the get go, and gave healers something to do other than stand around and look pretty. /shrug

I had fun doing this and look forward to showing you all the next 3 bosses, and then the big baddie himself. Feel free to comment with any ideas you have, or if you’re interested in creating a dungeon yourself I could always use a guest poster.

/Cheers

Hahaha, what a great idea! I LOVE “Sins of the Woodsman,” that’s a good mechanic and a better name. :-D

Great idea! You got me thinking about what all kinds of fun adventures I could come up with. I am definitely looking forward to the next part of the dungeon.

The ideas behind this project are great, and the instance itself sounds awesome. Blizz really should look for these kinds of ideas from players, kind of along the lines of what they did with the SC2 fan-designed map contest. Free development resources for Blizz, and players who want to can feel more involved in game design; total win-win.
